The Mechanicsburg Borough Council opposes the granting of a license for a resort casino in neighboring Hampden Township.
The council voted 6-1 Tuesday to send a letter to the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board in opposition to the proposal by Penn Harris Gaming for a casino at the Holiday Inn Harrisburg West on the Carlisle Pike. Council President Rodney Whitcomb was the lone dissenting vote.
Councilman J. Matthew Seagrist raised the issue at the council’s Sept. 7 meeting and was authorized to collect information on crime and fire statistics in communities with casinos, in addition to information on the economic impact of a casino in a municipality such as Hampden Township.
Seagrist said he was unable to find timely crime and fire numbers, but said the casino would be expected to provide $1.5 million in revenue to the township and $1.5 million to Cumberland County, which would provide grants to communities.
Council Vice President Charlie Ryder said he was concerned that the casino would increase the amount of time borough fire crews would be on call.
