On November 18, 2009, Stork Craft announced the massive recall of its line of drop-side cribs. This followed closely on the heels of the product safety recalls of the Bobby Chupette pacifiers and Maclaren strollers. What do these recalls cover and how can parents keep track of children’s product recalls?

Stork Craft Crib Recall

Canadian-based Stork Craft Manufacturing Inc. recalled all of its Stork Craft drop-side cribs manufactured and distributed between January 1993 and October 2009 as well as drop-side cribs with the Fisher Price logo manufactured and distributed between October 1997 and December 2004. The cribs were sold in Canada and at American retailers Kmart, Sears, J.C. Penney, B.J.’s Wholesale Club, Meijer, USA Baby, Wal-mart, and online sites for Wal-mart, Target, Babies “R” Us, Costco, and Amazon.

The cribs were recalled because pieces of the drop-side could break or malfunction, leading to a space between the side of the crib and the mattress that an infant’s head could get stuck in, leading to suffocation. The Consumer Product Safety Commission reported that there had been 67 such malfunctions in the United States and 43 in Canada. These incidents led to 15 entrapments, of which four led to the deaths of infants. Consumers have been urged to stop using the cribs immediately and to call Stork Manufacturing or visit their website to order a free repair kit.
