Now one member of the 2011 Baseball Hall of Fame is now known. Longtime Baseball Executive Pat Gillick is the only person on the 16-man Expansion Era Committee's ballot that garners the 75% yes votes to get into the Hall of Fame. Gillick received 13 votes. He was almost joined by Marvin Miller who was the head of the MLBPA (Major League Baseball Players Association) from 1966-1982; under Miller's watch the MLBPA transformed the game of baseball and became one of the strongest unions in the United States. Miller fell 1 vote short of joining Gillick in the Hall of Fame.

From Expansion to World Series Champs

Pat Gillick's tenure as the Toronto Blue Jays GM provided a blueprint as to how build an expansion team up to a competitive team, then a contender and finally World Series Champion. It was a long process; Toronto would not break .500 until 1983 when they put up an 89-73 record good enough for 2nd place in the old American League East division. In 1984, Toronto proved it was not a one-year wonder, repeating the 89-73 record and finishing in second place; this time 15 games behind the 1984 Detroit Tigers who led from wire to wire. The 1985 season Toronto claimed their first division title but lost in the ALCS (American League Championship Series) 4-2 to the eventual World Series Champs Kansas City Royals.

Toronto regressed in 1986 to an 86-76 record good enough for the 4th place, and in 1987 they blew a 3-game lead in the final week to the Detroit Tigers which culminated when the Tigers won the division 1-0, behind a complete game effort by Frank Tanana and a Larry Herndon solo homer, on the last day of the season in Detroit. In 1988, Toronto was in the chase down to the wire and finished 2 games behind the division winner (Boston Red Sox).
